Thomas

Thomas is the main character in the novel. He is a teenage boy. Thomas is one of the subjects in WICKED's experiment to find a cure for the Flare. It turns out that Thomas is immune to the Flare, so he cannot catch the airborne disease. Additionally, Thomas is the final viable subject for WICKED's final experiment, which is to test Thomas's brain.

Throughout the novel, Thomas has dreams. In reality, it seems these dreams are memories rather than dreams. Thomas dreams about how his parents caught the Flare and became sick. He dreams about how the government came to take Thomas away because they knew he was immune to the disease and wanted him to be a part of their experiments.
