Chapters 48 and 49 Summary

The guard tries to get the woman on the roof off. When he finally does, they drive away. They drive for a few minutes and then run over something metallic. They continue on but they are driving into complete darkness so Lawrence turns the headlights back on. About thirty cranks stand up ahead and start to attack the van.

A sledgehammer cracks the front windshield of the van. The sledgehammer strikes the windshield a few more times. A crank's arm comes through the windshield, but Thomas attacks the arm until the crank screams and withdraws the arm.

The van's wheels aren't working so Thomas, Brenda and Lawrence have to defend themselves while Lawrence continues to try to get the van loose. Eventually, the van shoots forward.
