Chapter 1 Summary

Thomas is in isolation in a white room. They feed him the same three meals each day, and also provide him with water. They haven't allowed him to clean himself in the three weeks he's been there, so his own stench is aggravating him. Thomas thinks about the disease (the Flare) inside of him—a virus that makes him inhuman.

Thomas has plenty of food, water and exercise, so none of this is a problem for him. It's his own stench that is bothering him so much. He wonders if the way he smells has something to do with the fact that he is dying. Thomas thinks about when Teresa said it was too late for Thomas—he'd already lost his sanity prior to coming to this place.
