Chapter 48 Summary

After doing all they can to make sure the children are secure, Rodion and Odd go to John's Mew. Rodion goes into the only room not occupied by a child and opens a case. Inside are two guns, one of which he offers to Odd, but Odd refuses. Odd prefers to use self-defense methods. They ride the elevator to the basement, hoping to use the same access tunnel Odd had been in earlier. They reach the panel and Odd takes the tool off the wall. They wait for a moment, but hearing nothing, Odd backs off the first screw. He stops after a couple of turns and bangs on the panel and immediately hears a frenzied clatter of rage and keening that seem to be coming from several voices. Carefully Odd tightens the bolt, and they ride the elevator to the ground floor...
