Chapter 46 Summary

Romanovich explains that John Heineman got his fiance, Jennifer Calvino, pregnant. She carried the child to term, much to John's dismay. He wanted nothing to do with his deformed son, and his hostility was so intense that Jennifer thought it best they had no contact. She raised Jacob lovingly alone, and he thrived right up until she became ill. She arranged for the church charity to care for Jacob for his remaining years. Heineman, meanwhile, had become famous and wealthy, and in the process of his research, he discovered that when the universe was viewed from a subatomic scale, there was indisputable design. He looked at his life, and as penance, gave his fortune away and retreated to a monastery where he funded the facility that cares for children, including Jacob.
