Chapter 47 Summary

Odd and Romanovich deduce that if Brother John is responsible for the monsters and is in some way in control of them, the child most at risk is Jacob. Whether Heineman is aware or not, it seems that Jacob is the target. They enlist the help of Brothers Knuckles and Maxwell, and go to Jacob's room, where they find him embroidering. They check the windows, finding that the casements open outward and are made of bronze able to withstand attack. Satisfied that only the stairwells need be guarded, Odd asks Jacob if he's all right. He tells Odd that "he wants him dead," and Odd tells Jacob that "he" can't have what "he" wants.
