Chapter 22 Summary

Sister Miriam tells Odd that the portrait Jacob draws is indeed Jacob's mother who raised him on her own. Before she died when he was thirteen, she made arrangements for Jacob to stay with the church. After her death, her ashes were scattered in the ocean. Jacob is convinced that he might not be able to find her when he dies, despite assurances that his mother now waits in heaven for him.

Odd turns to see a hooded figure in the doorway. The figure seems to be without a face, though he is standing under a light that should easily illuminate him. The figure retreats. Odd follows, but finds no sign of it.
