Chapter 45 Summary

Flossie is sitting on the floor with a book about dogs. One night her cousin showed up high on something and shot and killed her family. He then sodomized the 7-year-old girl until the drugs began to wear off. Then he fed the exhaust into the car, and, taking her with him, tried to kill himself. He lost his nerve and called 911. Odd explains that he could lightly hypnotize Flossie and then communicate with someone who might be able to tell them what is going to happen, but he can't do it and have her suffer the painful memories.

Rodion confesses that under the circumstances, he can trust them, and gives them his NSA card. Sister Angela asks Odd and Rodion who Jacob's father is, and they say Brother John Heineman, the patron of their Abbey.
