Chapter 38 Summary

Lacon asks Smiley to take over at the Circus until they could find a replacement for Alleline. He tells them to keep an eye on Haydon, who is being interrogated at Sarratt. They have plans to send him to Russia. Lacon arrives the next day to tell him that Haydon wants to talk with Smiley. He will only give an account of his activities if Smiley did the questioning. Haydon read from notes he had prepared. Haydon knows he is being traded to Russia and tells Smiley to hurry it up.
