Chapter 18 Summary

Smiley believes Bill Haydon, who had had an affair with Smiley's wife, is needed to complete the character of the group. Haydon knew why Merlin was there. Smiley says Bland does the translations and Bill writes the reports . Bill tells him that Smiley's problem is that he doesn't find Percy Alleline acceptable. Merlin would have been acceptable if he was Haydon's source, but not when he is Alleline's source. Haydon tries to tell Smiley that Alleline has sold out to Karla, but Smiley wants information on Merlin. Haydon knows Control is going through the files looking for information on them. His source is one of the secretaries. Haydon tells Smiley to cut himself from Control. He can't handle Alleline's success with Merlin.
