Chapter 19 Summary

Smiley continues reading about what transpired with Merlin since Smiley's dismissal from the Circus. There were noticeable chances since Alleline assumed control. Smiley learns about funding for a London house, of which Alleline had refused to provide the location. Smiley begins to believe that Merlin is in London and also notices that several discrepancies are noted by a J.P. Ripple, a member of the Foreign Office Research Department. Ripple was told to mind his own business and the proposition was put forth that Merlin wasn't one person, but several. The memo goes on to say that it is now more important than ever to protect the secrecy of the London house in order to protect their London operation. At that moment, Smiley receives a coded phone call from Peter Guilliam who is requesting an emergency meeting.
