Chapter 4 Summary

Smiley comments that Guilliam wasn't thrown out of the Circus as Smiley and others had been, and Guilliam replies that he was given charge of the scalp-hunters or "Travel," handled defectors and situations that were too messy for other agents to perform. Guillian explains that the organization is now based on lateralism under the control of London Station. Bill Haydon is the head of London Station with Roy Bland being the number two man. He asks about a man named Jim Ellis and finds that he is still in quarantine with a back problem. Smiley remembers being at Lacon's residence at a time when Jim Ellis was in the headline news. Ricki Tarr from Penang joins them at Lacon's house. Tarr had been recruited by an agent in Dhakarta and worked in Malaysia and Kenya.
