Chapter 33 Summary

Smiley and Lacon are meeting with the Minister and give him the facts, and the Minister's want to know how bad the scandal will be. They will apply pressure to the Russians to contain the scandal. Jim takes an emergency leave due to his mother's illness. The other teachers have worked out a plan for covering his classes. Roach is also sick again, and his father is threatening to take him out of the school.

Chapter 33 Analysis

The Minister is concerned with the political ramifications of the possible scandal that could result from the information that Smiley and Lacon have reported to him. The Minister thinks that the Russians will try to make fools of them. They tell him not to worry because they too have information that they can release about the Russians.
