Chapter 27 Summary

Smiley meets with Max, who had worked for Circus and was fired. Max tells Smiley that Jim asked for Max to partner with him for a job so big that it was run from the top. Jim told Max to take leave for a few days and obtain an Austrian identity and driver's license. Jim would have a Czech cover, and Max would go as an Austrian. They would travel to Brno. Max would meet Jim on a designated side street, and they would drive out of Brno to find a parked, black car, whose driver would take them to the rendezvous. They worked out all of their signals and contingency plans.

Jim missed the first rendezvous and Max would wait till Monday for Jim and Max was to leave if Jim didn't show . If Jim appeared, Max was to take a message...
