Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Arnold lays out an extensive, phased preparation program for new bodybuilders beginning weight training.

What bodybuilding career experiences make Arnold a believer in how weight training can benefit athletes in a wide variety of sports, as well as non-athletes?

Arnold discusses the fact that the three body types are not all ideal for bodybuilding, yet he still believes that anyone can persevere and win if sufficiently motivated and committed to training. What of Arnold's experiences help substantiate this? Provide examples from the book to support your response.

Essay Topic 2

Dennis Tinnerino is a formidable opponent for Arnold during many of his competitions. Arnold goes out of his way to study him. And although he is a friend and mentor to Arnold, Reg Park also becomes an opponent of Arnold's during a London competition.

At different times, Arnold has to decide how to approach competition with both of these men. Compare and contrast Arnold's thoughts, actions, and approaches in the competitive situations with the two bodybuilders. Cite evidence of his thought processes and logic from the book.

Essay Topic 3

As a teenager, Arnold has an unfulfilled need for recognition. After meeting men who serve as role models at the gym in Graz, he realizes that becoming a bodybuilder can provide that recognition.

Discuss reasons why men who exercise at a gym and are much older than Arnold emerge as sources of inspiration for a teenager who is hungry for recognition.

Why does bodybuilding seem to be an unlikely choice for a teenager? Discuss the appeal of bodybuilding as a vehicle for Arnold to gain recognition. If Arnold's experience occurred now, do you think bodybuilding would be a logical choice? Why or why not?
