Chapter 2 Summary

Penny helps her mother set up the cupcakes, plates, glasses, and other items on the refreshment table. Penny sees her mother approach a large women, who she later finds out is Charity's mother, Mrs. Wharton. The two mothers introduce the daughters because they are the same age and both girls are going into ninth grade together. As soon as their mothers turn their back, Charity's nice demeanor toward Penny turns to a mean demeanor.

Mr. Wharton, who appears to weigh close to four hundred pounds, leans on the refreshment table, which causing the table to collapse. As everyone runs and scrambles to try to save the cupcakes, watermelon boats, dishware and other items, everything winds up damaged and on the floor.
