Chapter 39 Summary

Later, Operation Lam Son 719 takes place and Dan is told they must attack Laos. Since the Marines had gone, this is the new task at hand. Dan doesn't understand this, as he thinks they should be where the Marines were. He argues with the Sergeant and the Sergeant tells him he's nothing but VC. The Sergeant slaps Dan in the face and walks away. Dan knows, however, that the enemy will just wait and attack them on the road to Laos. He thinks it's a very stupid plan.

The men are made to move anyway, and just as Dan suspected, they are ambushed on the road. Dan's troop moves into the tree line and tries to defend themselves to stay alive. A helicopter arrives to take the wounded, and the other men try to hang on to the outside in fear for their...
