Chapter 17 Summary

Senator stands in a new hole he just dug eating a can of C-ration meat for dinner. He and his unit will spend the next two days in this village until they move on. Senator sits and rethinks the things he has been through. He remembers Ottenburger telling him to stay with him while he dies. His memories are filled with sadness and painful remembrances.

Night starts to fill the sky and Snake arrives. He tells Senator they are definitely going to get hit tonight. Senator is sarcastic and says, "Good. Did you arrange it?" Snake tells him to shut up and get in his hole. He further tells him that no one wants to be in the war and he should stop being a crybaby.

As the firing lights up the sky, Senator cries and makes it back to his hold. He...
