Chapter 28 Summary

Hodges is on his way back to Vietnam after spending a month in a Japanese hospital. He can't believe it. He's got to get used to the fierce wind and heat again. He sits at the transition point of Okinawa, hoping he will be able to see Mitsuko again. He drinks four bourbons sitting at the bar before she arrives. He asks her to meet him later that night, but she says she has a boyfriend now. She's angry that he hadn't returned sooner, and he shows her his scars, telling her that he couldn't because he was hit.

She says maybe tomorrow she can meet him, but that's too late for him. She still says no, so he leaves and waits for her to come home later. She arrives at home and sees him on her doorstep. She says her boyfriend is...
