Summary

The novel opens with a map of Pantala, a continent shaped like a dragon. The dragons of Pyrrhia refer to Pantala the “lost continent.” The map shows the layout of nine communities, known as “hives.” The next section provides an overview of the three tribes of dragons in Pantala. The HiveWings have black scales mixed with reds and yellows. Some have stingers, venom in teeth and claws, or the ability to spray acid. Queen Wasp rules both the HiveWings and the SilkWings. The SilkWings do not develop wings until they are six, and can be any color. They spin silk from glands on their wrists. The LeafWings are considered extinct, the result of the “Tree Wars.” They “were accomplished gardeners” (11).
