Summary

In Chapter 4, Peril decides to leave quietly and alone. She hopes Clay will cry out in anguish and consider her noble, but she worries others will think she has run away to join Scarlet. She decides to tell Clay her plan but she almost runs into Turtle on the way. Turtle is sleeping in the hall because he feels “strange” in his sleeping cave now that the members of his winglet are all gone. (The Jade Mountain Academy students are divided into groups called winglets. Moon, Winter, Kinkajou, and Qibli set out on a quest and Turtle declined to go with them, but now feels he should have.) During their conversation, Peril tries to say the right thing but she always sounds skeptical or threatening, or makes comments that are not comforting.
