Many People Face Undeserved Hardships in Their Lives
Some characters in the novel simply have more than others do, and there is little that characters can do within the confines of their situation to improve these inequities. One of these is the socioeconomic distance between Misty and Patch. Misty is almost royalty in their small town. She is beautiful and has money, and she is the love interest of Chuck. Her father can provide her with anything she wants, including expensive hobbies like dressage. Ivy points to these inequities when Patch goes missing because, although she knows it is wrong to believe this, she thinks that the Meyer family already has so much and she has nothing, so it is not fair, in her mind, that they should be able to keep their daughter while she loses her son.
