Point of View

The novel is written from the third person point of view. It always follows the perspective of either Saint or Patch, and the reader is only privy to the thoughts of these two characters. This has multiple ramifications for the novel.

First, it allows the author to maintain a sense of mystery in the novel. This is a psychological thriller and mystery novel. The reader does not even know if Grace is real until the very end because her point of view is not given. Furthermore, the reader does not know why she was with Patch in captivity or why she was able to get out. Readers may assume she is being sexually exploited by Eli, but this proves to be false after the reader learns that she is his daughter.
