Patch
Patch is the protagonist in the novel. He is an anti-hero. While his desire to find Grace is noble, in many ways this one-sided focus leads him to reject, at least partially, those who love him the most. It also leads him to steal. His loyalty to Saint leads him to unintentional murder.
Patch is the only son of Ivy, a poor woman who falls into alcoholism and eventually dies. He cares for his mother financially, at first by working her jobs while he is a minor and then by giving her money once he is able to make it on his own. He is kidnapped as a young child while trying to save Misty from being murdered. He spends almost a year in captivity and in total darkness, but he is saved thanks to the loyalty and bravery of Saint. He spends the rest of the novel...
