Summary

In Chapter 8, Gwen and Rose go to the Gentry Quarter to get a royal permit. She fears that they will be run out of the inn by the sheriff if they do not have the permit. The assessor says that he does not see too many young girls getting permits to run businesses. Gwen wants to buy the inn, but she is told that all the land in the kingdom is owned by the King. He only grants privileges or a Certificate of Royal Permit to run a business. It costs them two gold coins. She will be taxed based on the income accrued. The certificate has to be renewed every year. Someone from the Lower Quarter’s merchants’ guild will visit and if he approves the business then their permit will be approved. The certificate can be revoked at any time.
