Summary

In Chapter 3, Hadrian is on the barge headed up the Bernum River. He feels like an outsider because everything seems strange to him. He is cold because he came from the south and is dressed for the climate. Hadrian meets the others on board the barge. Sebastian, Samuel and Eugene are merchants. Sebastian believes that Hadrian is wearing three swords because of the murders that happened in Vernes. Three men were murdered over three nights. He tells Hadrian that the man on the barge dressed in a cloak looks like an assassin. He has cold eyes. The cloaked man worries Sebastian and the others because he came on board at the last minute without any baggage.

The men question Hadrian about his trade. He tells them that he used to be a soldier. There is also a woman on the barge. Vivian is beautiful...
