Chapter 22 and Chapter 23 Summary

Alexandra decides that she wants a divorce or an annulment—anything that will get her out of the grasp of Jordan. However, she has no money and doesn't know how to get any. She decides to have Penrose pawn her grandfather's watch and with that money she will be able to pay for most of whatever she needs. That night, Jordan and Alexandra attend a ball, where they are the focus of everyone's attention. She is not behaving as Jordan wants her to, and he tells her that she needs to start obeying him. She gets offended and the two begin to argue in front of everyone. She begs to go home, and he tells her that if she gives her word to go straight home, she can go.

At the end of the night, Alexandra quietly slips...
