Chapter 5 Summary

On September 25, Ben eats dinner with Susan and her parents again. After dinner, Ben and Susan say they are leaving to walk down to Spencer's to get a soda. Instead of going to Spencer's, though, they walk to the park, where they make love on the grass. Afterward, they go for a walk, and Susan asks Ben about his book. He tells her that the book is about the Marsten House. He says that during the time that Hubert Marsten was living in that house, four children came up missing and were never found. Ben and Susan discuss the possibility that Hubert Marsten's evilness may still live in that house.

Ben walks Susan home, and before she goes inside, she tells him that she loves him. He goes back to the boardinghouse, but he cannot seem to write or sleep, so he drives...
