Chapter 3 Summary

At 4 a.m. the next day, Hal and Jack Griffen are beginning to milk their dad's dairy farm cows. At 4:30, the milkman Irwin "Win" Purinton is doing his milk route, and he leaves an extra carton of sour cream at the Norton house in response to Ann Norton's note.

5:15 comes, and Eva Miller is up in the boardinghouse making breakfast when Win gets there. She asks Win for extra milk and a gallon of lemonade. At 6:05, Sandy McDougall's baby is crying, and the noise wakes her up. She makes the baby a cold bottle, but the baby's cries bother her, and she starts screaming at him and punching him.

At around 6:45, Mike Ryerson, who is in charge of taking care of the town's three cemeteries, goes to work and finds Win's dog Doc hanging dead from one of the spikes at the top...
