Chapter 17 Summary

Holly talks about how difficult it is to live in the shadow of a man like her father. Reacher is confused as to what the kidnappers were hoping to gain by holding Holly, since her father would be replaced the second he came under duress. Reacher insists on talking to the kidnappers, forcing them to pull over to the side of the road. As Reacher begins to argue that the kidnappers have made a mistake, Loder fires the shotgun through the roof of the truck, leaving over a hundred holes in the ceiling. Back on the road, Reacher and Holly discuss where they might be going, able to narrow it down to the west somewhere. Eventually they stop for the night.
