Todd Hewitt

Todd is one of the protagonists of the story. He’s 12 years old at the start, roughly a month away from 13, which is the time he will be considered a man. Todd feels left out because he’s the only boy left in the town. He’s obsessed with being a man, and it’s clear that he cares a great deal about how everyone else views him.

Todd places little importance on education, preferring practical survival skills. He’s very stubborn and has a hard time admitting when he’s wrong. Todd tends to hold grudges, and he’s very hard on himself anytime that he messes up. He considers himself weak because he’s unable to bring himself to kill Aaron, or anyone else throughout the majority of the book.

Once he does take a life, Todd realizes how horrible it is to kill someone...
