Summary

Chapter 37

Todd wants to give up after all the loss he's experienced. Viola points out that if Todd does that, it would make all the sacrifices that everyone has done for him worthless. She admits that she doesn’t have any hope, but she doesn’t want to give up either because that would mean that Mayor Prentiss will have won. Todd agrees and the two spend the next few days running, trying to scavenge what supplies they can. All the settlements they come across are abandoned. They assume that word of the army spread and everyone is fleeing to Haven. They stop at one abandoned caravan to have breakfast, and Todd asks Viola to read from his mother’s journal, figuring this might be the last time he gets the chance.
