Summary

Chapter 1

The book begins with the main character, Todd, out in the swamps searching for apples. He’s accompanied by his dog, Manchee. Todd and the rest of his people are able to hear the thoughts of other people and animals. This is referred to as the Noise. The Noise allows Todd and Manchee to communicate with one another. Todd is upset because boys are the only ones ever sent out into the swamp. He’s about to become of age himself, once he turns 13. Todd starts getting upset and angry, which leads to him being attacked by an older man, Aaron. Aaron chastises Todd for thinking his negative thoughts and swearing. Aaron beats Todd and leaves. Todd has no idea what Aaron was doing out in the swamps to begin with.
