Chapter 2 Summary

Jake and Technical Sergeant Steve Oblensky talk with Major General Vandegrift at Headquarters. They tell him that they can count on the Coastwatchers. Vandegrift has heard of Major Edward Banning who tells him this. The men go inside to talk. Banning has a message from General Pickering. He is to prepare a report on Japanese capabilities and deliver it to Pearl Harbor and also be prepared to present it personally in Washington.

Banning and Vandegrift discuss the intelligence situation and how not to reveal sources. They discuss the poor communication between the Japanese Army and Navy and their strength. Banning believes that the Japanese General Hyakutake will attack Guadalcanal and try and take Henderson Field. He doesn't know when the attack will come but the General is already on the island. The Americans will need reinforcements.
