Summary

Chapter 19

Stamp Paid felt responsible for Paul D leaving 124. He walked past the house wanting to stop in; he wanted to find out if Sethe blamed him for telling Paul D about her past.

Sethe remembered her first days at 124; those were the best days in her life. She had women friends, her children and Baby Suggs. There were conversations and people who cared. There were sessions in the Clearing, singing, dancing and friendship. Then there was that day after the party when her entire life changed. Many years of misery and agony led her to the day when she felt alive again when Paul D entered but was easily wiped away when her past was revealed to him.
