Summary

Chapter 5

Sethe, Denver and Paul D returned home from the carnival to find a stranger sitting near the front of the house. Sethe immediately left to go to the outhouse responding to a strong urge to urinate upon seeing this person. The woman was well-dressed and very thirsty. She looked tired and under-nourished, her skin was very smooth. She told them her name was Beloved.

Beloved did not understand the questions Paul D asked about where she came from. He figured she was wandering away from her past life. Even though they wanted to know her situation, Paul D and Sethe knew not to push her for any information. Each colored had their unique story which may or may not ever be told.

Beloved was so tired, she fell asleep sitting up. She was offered the keeping room to stay in and immediately fell asleep...
