Vardaman - Chapter 56 Summary

It is nighttime, and all the stores are closed when Dewey Dell and Vardaman walk through Jefferson. Vardaman hopes to see a toy train that he wants to buy, but Dewey Dell heads to the drug store. Dewey Dell knocks, and a man, MacGowan, comes to the door and lets her in. With nothing else to do, Vardaman stands outside the drug store, waiting for Dewey Dell to come back out. While he waits, Vardaman thinks about how Darl went crazy and was then taken on a train to Jackson.

After a long time inside, Dewey Dell comes out complaining that it will not work. Vardaman asks her what she is talking about, but she just keeps saying that it will not work.
