Darl - Chapter 34 Summary

The current is strong, and the brothers are putting together a plan to cross it. Cash analyzes the situation slowly and cautiously, while Jewel is impatient to just cross the river and get it over with.

Finally, Cash comes up with a long, involved plan that includes Jewel crossing the river on foot and running a rope from the other bank to the wagon. Jewel hates the plan and simply wants to force the mules into the water to cross the ford. After listening to his brothers, Darl comes up with a compromise plan with which they can both live: Cash will force the mules into the river, while Jewel rides ahead holding a rope tied onto the wagon. However, the plan comes undone when a log comes up and hits the wagon.
