Darl - Chapter 17 Summary

The story jumps to the night when Cash is trying to finish Addie's coffin. Even though the rain is soaking through his clothes, Cash does not rush the job. Instead, everything he does is precise and absolutely right. Eventually, Anse comes outside to offer his help, but Cash tells him to go back indoors, which he quickly does. However, when Vernon arrives, Cash gladly accepts his assistance.

Cash continues to carefully work with Vernon, and, despite the fact that beveling the edges is a time consuming process, Cash does it, because it makes for a better job. Finally, after working long through the night, Cash finishes the coffin, wipes off his tools and puts them away.
