Chapter 28 Summary
The author says that loneliness can be dealt with by rocking in a fetal position, and the loneliness needs to move. Eventually, everyone forgets Beloved. Sethe, Denver and Paul D have a harder time forgetting, but they forget her because it is better than remembering her. They forget her like a bad dream. However, every so often, they think they see her face in a photograph.
In the stream behind 124, her footprints are sometimes seen. They go away when people step in them. Then the footprints go away altogether and things in the water are forgotten too. The wind is not her breath, it is just weather.
Chapter 28 Analysis
The footprints in the mud near the river could be, once again, ghostly footprints. On the other hand, they could simply be signs that Beloved comes back every so often to look on the house where she used to live.
