Stamp Paid arrives at 124. There are strange voices surrounding the house, but Stamp cannot understand what they are saying. Stamp feels guilty for telling Paul D about Sethe's past and possibly ruining both of their lives. Stamp remembers the ways that he used to help people escape slavery. Then he wonders if he should have considered Sethe's feelings before he showed the article to Paul D.
He remembers the way he respected Baby Suggs and the fact he had to carry her body out of 124 before the end of the Civil War. At the burial service, the neighborhood would not eat Sethe's food and Sethe would not eat the food that other people brought. Stamp wonders if he was an agent of divine punishment on Sethe when she was feeling too proud......
