Chapter 18 Summary

Sethe is walking circles around the room explaining to Paul D why she tried to kill her children. She touches on all sorts of subjects, but she does not really address the article that Stamp Paid gave to Paul D.

Finally, she tells Paul D that she took her babies and tried to take them someplace safe. Paul D tells her that she loved her children too much. Sethe tells him that she did what she had to do and that it prevented her children from going to Sweet Home. Paul D wonders aloud whether there was not any other way. Sethe tells him that there was not. Therefore, Paul D leaves. Sethe decides not to care.
