Chapter 17 Summary

At the slaughterhouse where Paul D works, he is responding to a newspaper clipping that Stamp Paid shows him. It shows a picture of Sethe, but Paul D says that the picture is not her. He cannot read, but he knows that any article written about a black woman means that she must have done something incredibly sensational in order to interest a white audience.

Stamp explains what happened. He tells Paul about the party and why people thought that Baby Suggs.....
