Chapter 16 Summary

The schoolteacher, his nephew, a slave hunter, and the sheriff arrive to take Sethe and her children back to Sweet Home. The men open the door to the woodshed and see Sethe holding her baby with its throat cut. She takes Denver and swings her at a wooden beam but she misses. Then Stamp Paid stops Sethe from swinging her child again. The four men decide that there is nothing to be claimed. Everyone except the sheriff rides off. The sheriff takes Sethe into custody. Baby Suggs takes the two boys and dresses their wounds.

Baby Suggs takes the dead child and gives Denver back to Sethe. She tries to get Sethe to clean the blood off of her nipple before feeding Denver, but Sethe refuses. The Sheriff drives away with Sethe. Another wagon arrives with two children delivering shoes for Baby Suggs to repair.
