Paul D thinks about the fact he is the last of the Sweet Home men. He wonders if being called a man was really the right of Mr. Garner. He thinks back on Garner and the way that Garner would trust the opinions of his slaves. However, the schoolteacher came along and said they were not men. Paul D wonders if the schoolteacher was actually right because that is the only way that Paul D can imagine a young girl having her way with him as she is doing.
Paul D decides to tell Sethe about what he has been doing with Beloved. He goes to the restaurant where she works. She is throwing old food to the dogs that meet outside the back door of the restaurant.
