Chapter 11 Summary

Paul D feels like Beloved is moving him around the house. First, he begins sleeping on a chair every night instead of with Sethe. Then he starts sleeping in Baby Suggs' old room. He thinks it is general restlessness at first, but that does not seem right to him either. Next, Paul D sleeps in the storehouse in the back of 124. Then he leaves the house entirely and sleeps in the cold house in the backyard. Beloved visits him and asks him to have sex with her. At first, Paul D manages to fight off her advances. However, he breaks down under her insistence and has sex with her out in the cold house.

Chapter 11 Analysis

When Paul D keeps saying, "Red heart," (117) repeatedly, it symbolizes the fact that he is feeling emotions again when he thought he did not have any left.
