Sethe thinks about Halle smearing butter all over his face. She remembers Baby Suggs telling her to just give up the war.

Sethe thinks back on Baby Suggs. Sethe had come to 124 and found Baby Suggs. Baby Suggs's body was so battered that she could only make a living on her heart. So, she preached in churches all around Cincinnati, regardless of denomination. She also went to a clearing where all the black people in the area came to hear her preach. Baby Suggs told everyone to laugh, to dance, and to cry. Then she preached that everyone should be happy with themselves and their bodies. She told the congregation that the white people hated them and their bodies, but they should love themselves and their bodies. However, later in life, Baby Suggs.....
