Paul D notices that Beloved desires someone in the house, but she does not seem to want him. He wonders if Denver or Sethe notice it. Paul D asks Beloved where she came from, but she is very vague in her answers. Paul D presses her, but she merely continues her strange responses. Paul D remembers a few other escaped slaves who had lost their minds on the run, so he is not entirely surprised. Nevertheless, she still bothers him. Beloved chokes on a raisin. Denver helps Beloved and takes her up to her room.
