Chapter 5 Summary

A woman comes out of the water and sits on a stump at 124. Sethe, Paul D, and Denver return from the carnival. As soon as Sethe sees her, she suddenly has to go to the outhouse. Her bladder is so full and the emergency is so immediate that she squats in the backyard. After urinating, Sethe goes into the house. The new woman is gulping down water. Paul D asks the new woman her name. She says her named is Beloved. Sethe and Denver are shocked. Paul D simply notices that she spells her name like someone who does not know how to write.
