Chapter 4 Summary

Denver asks Paul D how long he is going to hang around. Paul D is surprised and Sethe is offended. Sethe sends her off, telling Paul D that he is not allowed to yell at her or punish her. Paul D thinks it is a bad idea for an ex-slave to love her children too much. Paul D takes Sethe and Denver to a carnival on the day the carnival lays aside for black people. Sethe sees their shadows on the ground and notices way they always seem to be holding hands.

The carnival is not very good. However, the carnival has a day for blacks only because it is not very good, and black people are more than happy to see white people acting like fools. Paul D happily spends money on Denver and Sethe and smiles and waves at people as he walks. He makes...
